I’ve been to Romania twice but only for weekends in Bucharest. I’ve loved the experience I had of this country, and I’d love to go back and see more, ranging from the epic beaches to dramatic Transylvanian landscapes.

In this section you will find my top travel tips for Romania, and more specifically Bucharest.

Quick travel facts about Romania

Where is Romania? Romania is a country in South Eastern Europe.

How to get there: You can find the cheapest flights to Romania via SkyScanner. You can also travel overland from neighbouring European countries via train, car or bus.

Currency: Romanian Leu (RON) – see the latest exchange rate here.

Electrical plugs in Romania: Type F (the standard one you find throughout most of Europe) – I recommend an international adapter so you can use it on multiple trips.

Capital city: Bucharest

Best time to visit: Generally speaking, the best time to visit Romania is spring and summer, from mid-May through to mid-September. During this time of year the temperatures are warm, the days are long and there is minimal rainfall.

It’s the perfect time for those looking to visit the beaches in Romania or explore the Romanian countryside.

How to travel around Romania: The easiest way to travel around Romania is to rent a car and go on a road trip. That will give you the most flexibility on destinations and travel times.

Romania also has a fairly efficient public transport system, so you can travel around Romania via train or bus.

Visa requirements: A lot of passport holders can travel to Romania without a visa. Click here to see if your country is on the visa-free arrival list.
