Indonesia, and especially Bali, is one of those dream destinations that features on everyone’s travel bucket list. Whether it’s the influence of popular travel movies, social media, or in general the beauty of the island, there’s no denying that it’s a popular travel destination.

I’ve been to Bali twice, and from there ventured out to explore a bit of the surrounding islands like the Gilis in Lombok and East Java. However there is so much more to Indonesia that I still haven’t seen, and would love to explore.

With its huge variety of landscape and attractions; from volcanoes to temples, or from rice fields to beautiful beaches, Indonesia has something to offer for every type of traveller.

In this category you will find all my top travel tips for Bali and Indonesia!

Quick travel facts about Indonesia

Where is Indonesia? Indonesia is a country in South East Asia between the Indian and Pacific oceans, close to Oceania.

How to get there: You can find the cheapest flights to Indonesia via SkyScanner.

Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) – see the latest exchange rate here.

Electrical plugs in Indonesia: Types C&F (the ones you find throughout most of Europe) – I recommend an international adapter so you can use it on multiple trips.

Capital city: Jakarta

Best time to visit: Indonesia is a huge country with very different climates. However generally speaking the best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to September.

During the wet season, from October to April, you will still have hot days, but with strong and brief downpours. You can get a better idea of the weather averages for every month here.

How to travel around Indonesia: Indonesia is a huge country. The best transport modes ultimately depend on how far you need to travel. For short distances, for example around Bali, most people rent scooters.

If you don’t want to drive a scooter you can also do guided tours or get a car/minivan with driver, depending on your group size. You can also find very cheap internal flights on SkyScanner for travel within Indonesia.

Visa requirements: Most passport holders can get a free visa on arrival valid for 30 days. You can check if you country is on the visa free list here.
