The United Arab Emirates (or UAE), and specifically Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are amongst the most popular travel destinations in the world, and it’s easy to see why.

They’re the city of records, where the tallest building in the world, biggest mosque in the world, biggest fountain show in the world and so on (you get the picture), can be found.

Considering I’m not really a city fan, and usually prefer travelling to beaches, places with lots of nature and opportunities for outdoors activities, I was surprised to say that I really enjoyed visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

It’s one of those places you simply have to visit at least once in your life. In my case, I actually ended up visiting at least 6 times!

In this section you will find all my top advice and travel tips for making the most of your time in the UAE.

Quick travel facts about the United Arab Emirates

Where is the UAE? UAE is a country in the Middle East, on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

How to get there: You can find the cheapest flights to the United Arab Emirates via SkyScanner.

Currency: Emirati Dirham (AED) – see the latest exchange rate here.

Electrical plugs in UAE: Type G (the ones you get in the UK) – I recommend an international adapter so you can use it on multiple trips.

Capital City: Abu Dhabi

Best time to visit: The best time to visit the United Arab Emirates is between November and March. During the winter months the weather is pleasantly dry and hot.

During the summer months the weather is unbearably hot, with peaks of 40°C. Everywhere has air-con indoors, so it’s not a huge problem, but for the brief moments where you will be outside, it will be challenging.

While the winter months are the most popular climate-wise, this is also high season, when things will be busier and prices higher. Just something to think about when you plan your trip.

Another thing to take into account is that the UAE is a Muslim country. As such, you can might find restaurants and shops to be closed if you’re travelling during Ramadan.

This isn’t as much the case in Dubai, which is a very international and westernised city, but in other regions of the UAE things are more traditional.

How to travel around the UAE: The best way to get around the United Arab Emirates ultimately depends on what your itinerary includes. Most international travellers visit Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and do day trips to the desert and surrounding attractions.

In that case, you won’t need to rent a car, and can simply book organised day tours. You also won’t need a car to get around Dubai or Abu Dhabi, as there is excellent public transport and lots of taxis.

Visa requirements: Most passport holders will qualify for a visa on arrival for 30 days, 60 days or 180 days. You can check here what the specific visa requirements for your passport are.
