Suluban Beach is possibly amongst the most famous beaches in Bali. Known as the starting point for surfers wishing to surf in Uluwatu, this cove surrounded by ragged cliffs has become known also for its photo opportunities.

It’s not a very big beach, but with all the bars, restaurants and shops built on the cliffs above it, it’s definitely one of the most fun beaches in Uluwatu.

What is Suluban Beach in Bali 

Suluban Beach, Uluwatu (also known as Pantai Suluban) is a beautifully secluded beach that’s a popular jumping-off point for surfers looking to surf Uluwatu. 

But you don’t need to be into surfing to enjoy this scenic spot. You can spend time here sunning yourself on the strip of sand, paddle in the shallows and explore the amazing caves and canyons in the cliffs surrounding the beach. 

Although it’s a bit of a journey to get down to the beach via a steep set of stairs, you’ll be rewarded with a picturesque spot to spend some time chilling out and exploring. 

Where is Suluban Beach?

Suluban Beach on Bali, Indonesia is located to the south of the island, right in the heart of Uluwatu, around a 45-minute drive from Kuta.

Making up part of Pecatu village on the Bukit Peninsula, access to the beach is along the road to Uluwatu Temple. 

Nearby, the Blue Point Villas Hotel is a famous landmark that also gives Suluban its other name: Blue Point Beach. Uluwatu Beach is another blanket name for this coastal hotspot.

How to get to Suluban Beach 

Bali’s Suluban Beach is one beach that is worth the journey to get there.

Self-driving

The easiest way to get to Suluban Beach independently is to rent a scooter and drive yourself. Driving yourself means you can spend as much time at the beach as you like without having to wait for a taxi or tour group.

Note: This beach is also known as “Uluwatu Beach” or “Blue Point Beach”, which might be useful to know if you’re looking for road signs or the position on Google Maps.

Getting down to the beach

There are two routes which lead down to the beach. One route begins at the car park at Single Fin Beach Bar. From here a path leads down quite a few steps alongside bars and restaurants. 

The other option for getting down to the beach is known as the Suluban Beach Trail. This is located after Mana Uluwatu or the Istana right at the end of the road.

Rather than bars and restaurants, steps on this route lead through a forest right up until the other end, when you’re close to the beach.

Both of the routes have sets of stairs which are quite long but not too excessive. However, they do make the beach difficult to access for those with mobility issues.

Best time to visit Suluban Beach

One thing to pay attention to when visiting the beach is the tide. Turning up here at high tide will mean being greeted by a whole load of sparkling sea, but hardly any beach at all to sit on.

High tide is also the peak time for surfers who come here to enjoy the big breaks. Once the tide goes down the water is calmer and there’s plenty of space to relax on the sand. 

Just make sure to check the tide before you make the journey down all of those steps!

Suluban Beach entrance fees & opening times 

There’s no official ticket desk or checkpoint like you’ll find at Green Bowl and Melasti Beaches, but there is often a charge to access the beach. Locals at the top of the steps may stop and ask you to pay 5,000 IDR per person. 

As it’s not an official ticket desk, if you tell them you’re not going to the beach, that you’re just walking through to reach Single Fin or any of the other restaurants, they won’t charge you.

Infrastructure & services

There’s nothing in terms of facilities on Blue Point Beach Bali. Don’t make the journey expecting to find sun beds, umbrellas or even beach bars. You should make sure to take water, towels and snacks down with you. 

Don’t worry though: it’s not too far to get a bite to eat. There are plenty of bars and eateries perched on the cliffs above the beach.

From the self-styled legendary surf bar, Single Fin Bar, to the chilled Suluban Beach View Café. There are even some fancier bars with pools, so there’s something for every budget. 

What is there to do at Suluban Beach? 

Spending the day on Pantai Uluwatu means taking full advantage of the blissful scenery. You can simply spend your time here chilling out, tanning and taking a cooling swim in the sea.

The beach is the prime Uluwatu surf spot and a surfer’s paradise so you could catch a wave or two if that’s your thing. There’s also a reef where you can snorkel. You probably won’t be swimming with turtles, but you’ll still see plenty of fish.

When you get hungry or fancy a drink, simply stroll up to one of the bars, these are particularly amazing spots to sit for sunset with a drink or two.

Towards the end of the day, the bars start to play music. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, stop by Single Fin for one of its famous Sunday parties.

Is Suluban Beach worth visiting? 

Yes. It can get very busy on the beach, especially with surfers who flock here to hit this iconic surf spot. But there are a lot of bars and places for people to chill out, so the crowds tend to be spread out quite a lot.

Plus, it’s one of those iconic Uluwatu spots you just have to see!

It might not be the most beautiful beach in Uluwatu, but it’s definitely very scenic, and with the nearby bars and restaurants, it makes for a fun day out. It’s easy to see why it features on every Bali bucket list.
