I’ve been to Croatia three times and always find myself going back. The pristine beaches, dramatic coastline, medieval old towns and stunning nature are amongst the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.

Croatia is one of those iconic destinations that should feature on all European bucket lists. It’s a country of stunning natural beauty, with friendly locals and delicious cuisine.

If you’re planning a trip to Croatia, you’ve come to the right place! Here you will find all my top Croatia travel tips.

Quick travel info about Croatia

Where is Croatia? Croatia is in Europe on the Adriatic Sea.

How to get there: You can find the cheapest flights to Croatia via SkyScanner. You can also travel overland from neighbouring countries via train, bus or driving with a rented car.

Currency: Croatian Kuna (HRK) – see the latest exchange rate here.

Electrical plugs in Japan: Types C&F (the ones you find throughout most of Europe) – I recommend an international adapter so you can use it on multiple trips.

Capital City: Zagreb.

Best time to visit: Summer is high season in Croatia. From June to September you can find warm and sunny weather, but also quite large crowds and high prices.

In spring (March to May) and autumn (September and October) you can find still fairly nice weather, and considerably less tourists. It won’t quite be beach weather but you can explore the epic waterfalls and national parks of Croatia.

How to travel around Croatia: If you plan to move around Croatia a lot the easiest way to travel around is to rent a car and drive yourself. Croatia also has a very good bus system, although you won’t have as much flexibility.

We spent ten days in Croatia between Dubrovnik and Split and didn’t feel like we needed a car, as all day trips included transfers or were within walking distance. However if you plan to see more a car will make things easier.

Visa requirements: Croatia is in the EU but is not part of Schengen. Most passport holders won’t need to apply for visas before travelling to Croatia. Check the visa requirements for your nationality here.
