What is Seven Wells Waterfalls

Seven Wells Waterfall in Langkawi, Malaysia is one of the top sightseeing spots on the island.

Also called Telaga Tujuh Waterfall, the beautiful series of cascades is famous for its “wells” — little pools in which you can swim surrounded by rainforest scenery.

There are actually two sections to see the waterfall, an upper or top part and the lower part. To reach the top part, you’ll have to walk up around 300 steps to get to it.

Here you’ll find all these little pools to swim in, plus other hiking trails that set off from here, not to mention a bridge with a glass section, so that you can see the water churning below.

You’ll also have amazing views of the SkyCab and forest-clad mountains all around.

The lower part of the Seven Wells Waterfalls is slightly more scenic because you’ll have a huge torrent of water flowing behind you, though it doesn’t have those same panoramic views, as it’s tucked away into the forest.

There are pools that you can swim in also in the lower part.

How to get to Seven Wells Waterfalls

With a tour

Probably the most convenient way to get to Langkawi’s Seven Wells Waterfall is to book yourself onto a tour.

A tour will often come with a guide, pick you up from your accommodation, and organise transport for you both to and from the waterfalls. This takes all the hassle about transport out of our day.

By car or motorbike

Getting to Seven Wells Waterfalls by rental car or bike is probably the best way to do it. There are loads of places to rent a car on Langkawi, and it’s a great way to get around the island given the lack of public transport.

From the parking area, the stairs up to the waterfalls themselves are well-marked, all you have to do is follow them up.

You can also hail a Grab taxi, which shouldn’t cost much (around RM 22 from the Cenang Beach area), but it might be tricky to find one available for the way back.

Other than that, there aren’t any public buses that run to Seven Wells Waterfalls.

Best time to visit Seven Wells Waterfalls

This waterfall in Malaysia is at its best during the rainy season (around September to December). This is when there will be more rain, therefore more water in the waterfall, and so it will look way more impressive.

The downside of seeing Seven Wells Waterfalls in the rainy season is getting caught in the rain—not as fun. The path can also be more slippery when the waterfall is at its best, so make sure to wear adequate footwear.

Dry season means less chances of getting caught in a downpour, but it also means that the waterfall won’t be at its best.

For somewhere in between, the shoulder seasons (March-April and October-November) still see some rain, meaning the waterfall is still going to look pretty cool.

As for what time of day to visit, go in the morning—it’s always less busy than later in the day.

What is there to do at Seven Wells Waterfalls

Most people go to Seven Wells Waterfalls to swim in the waterfall pools, enjoy the view and take pictures of the scenery. It’s an awesome place for a photo opportunity. But there is more to do here, mainly in terms of hiking.

Before the stairs from the carpark direct you left to go to the waterfall, you’ll see a sign for Trail 701 to Machinchang Peak. As the sign states, it takes around 2/2.5 hours to trek up to the top, and a little less than that going back down.

It’s a hot, sweaty walk and you’ll need to take plenty of water with you.

But the views from the peak (701 metres above sea level) are pretty spectacular, and the walk through the jungle to get there is an adventure in itself but don’t worry, there’s plenty of signage and the trail is easy to follow the whole way.

Waterproof jacket – If you visit in rainy season, you’ll be glad to have one of these!

Dry bag – To keep your valuables safe and dry from any rogue water splashes from the waterfalls.
