Best areas for first‑time visitors

If it’s your first trip to the Algarve and you want a central base with plenty of hotel options, restaurants and tours, focus on Lagos and Albufeira.

  • LagosThe perfect place to stay for first-timers. It’s conveniently positioned close to all the main attractions in the Algarve, making it a great place to base yourself.
  • Albufeira: The party town in Algarve, with lots of affordable hostels, bars and restaurants. It’s ideal if you want a lively, tourist‑friendly base with a huge beach on its doorstep, and endless dining and nightlife options.

Both towns are well connected by bus and train, and there are many day‑trip options from each.

Best areas for families with kids

For families, you want calm beaches, shallow water, and walkable towns where you can easily reach shops and restaurants without a car. Towns in the central and east Algarve work best, for example:

  • CarvoeiroThe perfect town to stay in the Algarve for a family beach holiday. A beautiful beach on its doorstep, close to many attractions, plenty of amenities in town and a friendly atmosphere. Great for kids with hiking, boat tours and nearby theme parks.
  • TaviraA small medieval town with an old town centre and gorgeous beaches on its doorstep. Perfect for a relaxed beach holiday. Quieter and more authentic than the main tourist hubs, with easy ferry access to island beaches.
  • QuarteiraA romantic small town with pretty beaches and a laid back vibe, perfect for couples and families who want a calm, local‑favourite resort with reasonable prices even in peak season.

Best areas for couples & romantic breaks

Couples often prefer towns with character, scenic viewpoints, and good restaurants, without the noise of big party zones. If you’re travelling to the Algarve with your partner, consider:

  • TaviraA charming medieval town with an old town centre and gorgeous beaches on its doorstep. Cobbled streets, white houses and a slower pace make it perfect for couples who want a relaxed beach holiday.
  • QuarteiraA romantic small town with pretty beaches and a laid back vibe, perfect for couples. Popular in and out of season, with a relaxed but not sleepy atmosphere and easy access to boat tours and dolphin watching.
  • Carvoeiro: Intimate, picture‑postcard town with white houses perched above a beautiful beach. Ideal for slow mornings, long lunches and sunset walks.

Best area for nightlife & groups

If nightlife is your priority, there’s really only one main hub: Albufeira, with Portimão as a secondary option.

  • Albufeira (Old Town & Strip): The party town in Algarve, with lots of affordable hostels, bars and restaurants. The Old Town and “Strip” are packed with bars, clubs and late‑night food, busy in summer and easy for meeting other travellers.
  • Portimão: More local vibe but still solid nightlife, plus a marina and the famous Praia da Rocha beach. Good if you want a mix of beach time, seafood restaurants and evening drinks without the full‑on party scene of Albufeira.

Best area for surf & wild beaches

For surf, head to the west coast (Costa Vicentina) and the southwestern tip around Sagres, with Lagos as a more amenity‑rich alternative.

  • Sagres: If you want to surf in the Algarve, Sagres is the place to be. It’s a small town with a very laid back vibe, nice bars and restaurants, and a short drive away from all the best surf beaches. Great for both novice and expert surfers, with equipment hire widely available.
  • Lagos (west side): A bit further away from the surfing beaches compared to Sagres, Lagos offers more services, restaurants, hotels and better prices. It’s the best place for first timers who also want to surf, and who want a livelier town life.

Best area for a quiet beach holiday

For a quiet, relaxed beach holiday, focus on the east Algarve and smaller resort towns, for example:

  • TaviraA small medieval town with an old town centre and gorgeous beaches on its doorstep. It’s much more serene than the main tourist hubs, which makes it great for a relaxed beach holiday.
  • QuarteiraA romantic small town with pretty beaches and a laid back vibe, perfect for anyone who wants a calm, local‑favourite resort. Reasonable prices even in peak season, with a good mix of restaurants and beach time.

Here you’ll find cobbled streets, museums, historic sites and a local scene, plus close to unique attractions like Capela Dos Ossos and natural parks, and sandy spots like Ilha Deserta.

Best area for beach + shopping

If you want to pair a beach holiday with some trendy shopping, Portimão is the place to stay. It’s A busy city with historic architecture, markets, shops and a strong focus on retail and leisure, plus the famous Praia da Rocha beach.

Ideal if you want to combine morning beach sessions with afternoon shopping sprees and seafood dinners.

If it’s your first time visiting this part of Portugal, figuring out Algarve, where to stay and what sights to see, can be quite tricky. Luckily, Lagos is easily one of the most-visited locations in any Portugal itinerary.

Thanks to the iconic beaches, character-filled surroundings, rich heritage, and great tourist facilities, this area welcomes first-time travellers with open arms.

The level of tourism in Lagos makes it an easy place to feel welcomed and at ease, especially if this is your first trip abroad.

The town itself is characterised by the usual cobbled streets and white houses, lined with bars and restaurants.

It offers all the amenities you might need, while also being strategically close to many of the most famous beaches and attractions of the Algarve, so that you don’t have to travel too far.

The heavy tourist presence can sometimes detract from an authentic Portuguese experience, but luckily it’s just a day trip away from places like Olhao or Tavira, which are much more traditional.

  • Best for: Nightlife, party holidays, budget‑friendly breaks, first‑timers who want a lively base.
  • Vibe: Lively party town split between a cute old town on the hill and “The Strip” by the sea.
  • Beaches: Huge beach right on its doorstep; long promenade with beach bars.
  • Good to know: Ideal if you want to dance the night away and relax on the beach the next day; lots of affordable hostels and hotels.

This coastal city is perfect for letting your hair down, whether you’re experiencing the nightlife or simply cruising along the promenade and sandy beaches.

Albufeira is characterised by its old town with white houses and cobbled streets perched on the hill high above the beach, and the modern strip located below next to the sea. It also has a huge beach just on its doorstep.

After a night out at one of the many beach bars on the promenade you can spend the next day relaxing on the huge beach, exploring the cute streets of the old town above or taking a day trip to one of the famous locations nearby,

Tavira is one of Algarve’s best places to enjoy some tranquillity.

While most people will mention Carvoeiro, we’ve chosen Tavira based on its beaches, churches, and the Gilão River. This city boasts protected waterways and untouched countryside.

This area attracts fewer tourists than any other part of the Algarve region, which makes for a spectacularly serene stay.

You can relax on the beach and catch up on your favourite book or experience the cultural attractions on your way back to the hotel. The town itself is really cute, characterised by the recognisable Portuguese white houses and cobbled streets.

  • Beaches: Some of the Algarve’s best beaches; great for swimming and boat trips (e.g. Benagil cave).

This region has some of the best beaches in the Algarve area, and the serenity you can find here makes this a double winner.

With its iconic white houses perched right above the beach, Carvoeiro is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest towns in Portugal.

On the one hand, Carvoeiro is a special place for calming beach holidays, but the amount of fun activities here also makes this a wonderland for the kids.

This best of both worlds town offers hiking trails, boat tours, and a few theme parks as well. Take a trip to the famous Benagil cave, enjoy the beautiful Praia do Carvoeiro beach, or take a trip to Slide and Splash water park.
