Before we dive into the details of each town and the best Amalfi Coast hotels to stay in each, I wanted to give you a quick overview of the best towns to stay in Amalfi Coast, and what type of traveller they are best suited for.

PositanoPositano is the quintessential Amalfi Coast town. It’s polished, perfect for exploring and has plenty of places to eat and soak up the scenery. It’s the best place to stay for couples.

AmalfiThis is the best town to stay if you don’t have a car. One of the largest towns on the coast, Amalfi is a lively spot with great places to stay and even better transport connections, which makes getting around a breeze.

SorrentoIt may not be on the Amalfi Coast, but Sorrento serves up its own sweeping views and historical sights – not to mention great transport connections to Amalfi.

It’s somewhat more affordable than the other towns, which makes it perfect for budget travellers.

Salerno: This city has restaurants, hotels, shops and transport connections, none of which are seasonal, making it an ideal jumping-off point for the Amalfi Coast if you’re visiting in low season.

Maiori or MinoriThe twin towns of Maiori and Minori aren’t amongst the most popular towns in Amalfi Coast, but they have historical sights, family-friendly resort accommodation, great beaches and quaint streets to wander.

They’re slightly less touristy, and great for families.

CapriSlip into the dolce vita and soak up the stunning surroundings of Capri, the famous island just across the sea from the Amalfi Coast.

Positano might be great for couples in general, but if you’re on a honeymoon, the island of Capri is even more magical.

Understanding where to stay on the Amalfi Coast

Besides who you’re travelling with – as a family, a couple or with a group of friends – where to stay on the Amalfi Coast depends on the logistics of your trip.

Basically, the best area to stay on the Amalfi Coast isn’t going to be the same for everyone.

For example, if you want to rent a car or scooter, then you can choose accommodation beyond the main towns. Otherwise, it’s best to stick to bigger towns with better public transport (i.e. Salerno or Amalfi).

Also, consider how long your Amalfi Coast itinerary is. For short trips, it’s better to stay in the main towns as you’ll be able to see more without travelling so much.

If you’re in the Amalfi Coast for longer, you can pick somewhere quieter as you’ll be exploring more.

If you visit Italy in summer, the main spots will be both expensive and super busy, whilst if you visit Italy in winter, it’s cheaper but hotels and restaurants may be closed.

High season also means public transport is packed, which can mean literally having to fight your way onto buses!

If that doesn’t seem fun to you, consider shoulder seasons. Other things to think about include whether you want to be near a beach, or to book a hotel with a pool instead.

Amalfi Town: Best place to stay in Amalfi Coast without a car

Amalfi Town is definitely the place to stay on the Amalfi Coast without a car.

That’s mainly because of its great transport connections, with all the buses and ferries stopping here before heading elsewhere. It’s the public transport hub of the area, and a whole host of tours start from here too.

Basically you won’t have to change ferries or buses to get back to your accommodation, as you would have to do if you were staying in one of the smaller towns or tiny villages not on the coast.

Besides not having to drive, you won’t waste too much time navigating public transport, which means more time to explore the towns and beaches, and less travelling around in buses or ferries. This is ideal if you have a tight Italy itinerary.

Plus, the town center of Amalfi itself has lots of great things to do, iconic sights like the Piazza del Duomo, the Duomo di Amalfi, and great beaches.

It’s set on the opposite side of Amalfi Coast, but still on the sea and only about an hour away from Amalfi by car (or ferry).

Salerno: Where to stay in Amalfi Coast in low season

Salerno is the best location to stay on the Amalfi Coast in low season. That’s because it’s the biggest city in the area, and still remains well connected by bus, ferry and road to Amalfi Coast towns.

Being a larger city, it’s also pretty lively with restaurants, bars and shops that don’t close in winter. There are also many locals living in Salerno, which makes it a year round destination.

Instead, in some of the smaller towns in Amalfi Coast, it’s not uncommon for local business, bars, restaurants and guest houses to close for the winter season.

In short, it’s less touristy and remains a fun, local town throughout the year – and it’s got impressive sights all of its own, too.

Capri: Best place to stay in Amalfi Coast for honeymoons

Capri is an island, but still technically part of the “Costiera Amalfitana”. The famous island is stunning and the perfect place to stay on the Amalfi Coast for honeymooners.

I know I’ve already said Positano is great for couples, but if you’re travelling with your significant other on a special occasion (like a honeymoon), then Capri is even better than Positano.

There’s an exclusive feel to this storied island, which has captivated visitors ever since the days of Ancient Rome.

Here it’s all about the dolce vita – think winding coastal roads, glistening blue seas that you can discover on a fun Capri boat tour and lemon tree groves, plus an enticing selection of luxury hotels.

Most tourists visit Capri on a day trip, which means in evenings it becomes even more exclusive.

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular destinations on every Italy itinerary, and it’s easy to see why. Alongside other iconic destinations like Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre and Rome, it’s simply a beautiful place.

Choosing where to stay in Amalfi Coast can be tricky, especially since prices are so high everywhere. Choosing the right town will not only help you find more affordable accommodation, but also find a town with a vibe that fits your travel style.

It’s worth noting that there isn’t a single best option. What may seem an excellent choice to me might not be the same for you. You should also take into account if you want a hotel with easy access to the beach, a wellness center, maybe a beach club or even a private beach.
