Do you need travel insurance to visit Barcelona?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance.

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your travel insurance with  Heymondo.

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

As a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance!

Most Instagrammable buildings in Barcelona

Sagrada Familia – from the outside

Spoiler alert; there will be a lot of Gaudí artworks in this roundup. Gaudí was a genius who left a strong architectural influence in Barcelona, the most famous amongst these being the Sagrada Familia.

The Sagrada Familia is a large Catholic Church, currently unfinished.

It is very imposing so if you want to snap a picture with the whole building make sure to take it from the small park in front of the facade of Sagrada Familia, as you’ll be able to get the whole building in one shot.

Sagrada Familia – from the inside

As you can imagine a master piece like the Sagrada Familia is pretty beautiful also on the inside, and can’t be seen just from the outside. In terms of photo opportunities, the interior doesn’t disappoint either.

One of my favourite things about Barcelona is that the weather is pleasant all year (which is what makes it one of the best cities to visit in Europe in winter!) meaning you can get great photos both indoors and outdoors at any time of year.

The famous facade of Casa Battló in Barcelona, Spain

Casa Battlò – from the outside

As promised, here is another Gaudí you have to add to your list of Instagrammable locations in Barcelona.

The facade of Casa Battlò is in my opinion on of its most stunning features, with the colourful tiles and undulated balconies.

The building is tall and imposing however, so you won’t be able to snap good photos of it from below it, as it won’t all fit in the frame.

For a more photogenic Instagrammable shot, head over across the street so that you can fit the whole building in. Bonus points if you hang off the metal framing of the bench located there.

Unless you’re visiting very early in the morning the traffic will be quite mental, so prepared to wait a while for the perfect moment without cars.

Casa Battlò – from the inside

If the exterior of Casa Battlò is stunning, the interior isn’t far behind it.

The recurring theme of nature in its architecture makes Casa Battlò one of the most visited attractions in Barcelona, and one of the most Instagrammable.

With its colourful mosaic windows and the undulated architecture on the rooftop there are plenty of good photo opportunities inside the house.

Casa Battlò isn’t just a great photo spot. It’s also one of the top attractions and best things to do in Barcelona, which features on pretty much all the Spain bucket lists.

Barcelona Cathedral – from outside

The Barcelona Cathedral is one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in Europe, and the seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona.

With an imposing artwork like Sagrada Familia just around the corner the Barcelona Cathedral often goes unnoticed, but make sure to pay it a visit if you want to visit a beautiful Gothic cathedral and snap some excellent Instagram shots.

Barcelona Cathedral – from the rooftop

I imagine you might be getting bored of my photo from the outside and photo from the inside approach, so to spice things a little when it comes to the Barcelona Cathedral I actually recommend snapping photos outside or from the rooftop.

While the inside is beautiful it is very similar to other Gothic cathedrals around, whilst the view of the rooftops of Barcelona is unique.

Access to the inside and rooftop of Barcelona Cathedral is free in the morning up until 1pm, except for Sundays.

If you’re travelling to Barcelona during weekdays save yourself some money and visit the Barcelona Cathedral in the morning, so you can snap this Instgrammable shot from its rooftop!

Palau de la Música Catalana

If you love colourful interior decor you will love the Palau de la Musica Catalana; a famous concert hall designed in the Catalan modernist style and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the day when there are no musical performances taking place it is possible to visit this beautiful building.

With its detailed interior decorations and the colourful mosaic columns on the outside balcony, both the concert hall and other spots in the Palau make for excellent Instagram shots.

Hospital de Sant Pau

When it comes to Instagrammable buildings in Barcelona, the Hospital de Sant Pau has to feature on the list.

Together with the Palau de la Musica Catalana it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was designed in the Catalan modernism style.

Before you say it, yes taking photo for the ‘gram outside a hospital is a bit weird.

Don’t worry though, Hospital de Sant Pau is no longer a hospital and hasn’t been since 2009, when it was renovated for use as museum and cultural centre.

So you can snap some Instagram worthy shots of its beautiful architecture, then go inside and learn about Catalan history.

Most Instagram worthy parks in Barcelona

Bunkers del Carmel

Bunkers del Carmel is one of my new favourite locations in Barcelona, and not just for taking Instagrammable photos.

Bunkers del Carmel is a park a short metro journey out of the centre of Barcelona, once you reach the metro station (El Carmel or Alfons X, depending on where you’re coming from) you can either bus it up the hill or walk if you’re feeling sporty.

Once you get to the top there are epic 360 degrees views over Barcelona, and you will find a lot of the locals having picnics enjoying the nice weather and view.

While all the view is Instagram-worthy, there is one specific spot that is extremely Instagrammable, if you feel confident enough to climb over a railing to reach it!

Check out the exact location here.

Park Güell

Park Güell is the last Gaudí artwork on this list. Exploring Gaudí’s stunning architecture is a highlight on every Spain bucket list.

The famous park is a short metro ride outside of central Barcelona, and with its intriguing architecture and view over the rooftops of Barcelona it is one of the most visited areas of Barcelona.

At the time when I visited (February 2018) the park was undergoing construction so you had to pre-book tickets and not all areas of the park were open.

If you’re visiting on a weekend and want to take pretty photos for Instagram, make sure to go early as it will get very busy very quickly.

Park de Montjuic

Park de Montjuic differs from the first two parks in this list in that it is an actual park with green walking areas, unlike the two previous parks which are better known for their views or architecture.

The park has wide green gardens that you can walk around, with a number of important landmarks dotted here and there, such as the Olympic Stadium.

You can walk around Park Montjuic absorbing the relaxing vibes, snapping Instagrammable photos that will make your friends want to book a spring getaway.

Most Instagrammable streets in Barcelona

Carrer del Bisbe, Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona is a beautiful area with cool architecture and an interesting vibe for those that love wandering small backstreets.

If you want to snap an Instagrammable shot during your wanderings make sure to walk past Carrer del Bisbe.

This street is characterised by the famous Pont Gòtic, an archway that connects the two buildings on opposite sides of the street.

The street is very small so if you want to take a photo without the crowds, make sure to visit early in the morning. Or learn how to Photoshop people out, either works pretty well.

Find out the exact location of this Instagrammable bridge here.

Carrer del Dr. Joaquim Pou

Carrer del Dr. Joaquim Pou is in my opinion one of the most Instagrammable locations in Barcelona thanks to its view of the Barcelona cathedral.

The main facade of the building is hidden, with only the spikes and roofs of the the cathedral visible.

To me the natural framing given by the surrounding buildings makes it an intriguing shot, that makes people wonder what the imposing building at the end of the street is.

Which they will then find out from one of your other epic Instagram shots 😉

Passeig Maritim, Barceloneta

Barceloneta is a neighbourhood Barcelona along the sea, where locals go to surf, sunbathe and dine at the outdoors seafood restaurants. Passeig Maritim is the seaside road along which you can walk and enjoy a beach stroll.

Beaches are usually always good photo spots (if you need trip inspiration for this summer, check out these top 20 beaches you have to visit) but Barceloneta especially makes for good photos thanks to its city location.

If you want photos that are a bit different from the usual beach and palm trees, here you’ll be able to get shots with beach and epic buildings in the background.

Passeig de Sant Joan, Arc de Triomf

Everyone knows about Paris’s Arc de Triomf, but did you know Barcelona has one too?

I personally loved Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf because with its red bricks it’s very distinct and original when compared to the more traditional white arches you see around Europe.

The Arc has a wide road, Passeig de Sant Joan, on one side and a small park on the other, which make it a perfect Instagrammable location as you can snap photos of it from any angle and distance.

Take epic Instagram photos in Barcelona with this gear

Now that you know all the most places in Barcelona, I figured I should share with you what gear I use to take these Instagram-worthy photos.

Most of the times a phone camera is fine, but if you’re looking to step up your photography game and want to amaze all your friends back home and on social media, you might consider purchasing the following items.

Nikon D3300: This is the camera I use to take all my photos and videos. I purchased it before I started travel blogging since it’s considered one of the best DSLRs for beginners.

It’s not the best model out there but compared to other DSLRs it’s fairly cheap and it’s quite easy to use.

You can also change lens so when you’re ready to step up your photography game you can just purchase a new lens instead of a whole new camera.

Nikon f/1.8 35mm lens: Which leads on to the second point on my list; a bokeh lens.

Bokeh is that nice soft blurred background effect that you see in professional photos, which makes the main object in the frame stand out. This type of lens allows you to get that (see below).

Manfrotto compact tripod: If you travel solo, you might want to take a tripod with you.

You can’t always trust strangers to take good photos of you so if you want to make sure the photo is framed exactly like you want it to, arm yourself with a tripod and don’t let other people put you off.

If anything, I find people are less likely to get in your photo if you have a tripod since they think you’re a professional of some sort. I like the Manfrotto compact tripod since it’s so light and easy to carry around.

Selfie stick: If you don’t quite feel comfortable enough carrying around a tripod, go for a selfie stick instead. There have become increasingly popular and it’s not weird at all to see one used in a popular tourist destination.

These are the main pieces of camera I used to take all the Instagram photos you can see in this guide, if you want to know what other gear I use to take my videos check out my full guide here.
