Do I need travel insurance for Italy?

It might not be the first thing you think of when you’re planning your Italy itinerary, but it’s a good idea to consider getting travel insurance for your trip to Italy.

In general, travel insurance is there to help you when things don’t go according to plan.

We all want to have the best trip ever, but things can happen that we can’t foresee – from flight cancellations, to lost luggage, and sometimes injuries and illness.

Getting Italy travel insurance could really help to make your trip run a lot more smoothly, helping you to enjoy yourself without worrying.

I know you might not want to add the expense to your Italy travel budget, but trust me when I say, if something does go wrong you’ll be glad you paid for travel insurance, and not the thousands of euros that mishaps can cost.

Not only that, but travel delays are not uncommon in Italy and this kind of hiccup can be covered by your travel insurance. Lost or stolen luggage can also be a problem that is eased by travel insurance.

Another issue that you might come up against is petty theft. Like many other touristic cities in the world, you might experience this when exploring cities like Rome and Milan.

That’s not to say that Italy is particularly dangerous – it’s just something that can happen. But knowing you will be covered for any lost items by travel insurance can really ease any worries you have.

And then there’s the fact that you’ll be covered for medical treatment, too. Obviously no one wants to have a medical emergency while travelling, but if it does happen, it’s good to be covered for it.

The public healthcare in Italy is great, but you will need to pay for any treatment you receive if you don’t have any medical insurance to cover it.

If you have medical travel insurance, any treatment you receive will be covered by your insurance. This could save you literally thousands of dollars in the long-run as medical expenses can be pretty high!

What does travel insurance cover?

When it comes to buying travel health insurance for Italy, there’s a few different things to consider. At first, working out which insurance to get can be confusing.

Different insurance policies will offer various types of coverage. Here’s what you should look out for in a policy to make sure you are protected for the things you want to be covered for…

Bags & personal effects

So you’re ready for your trip to Italy, you’ve decided what to pack for Italy and all of your expensive electronic equipment, and you’re ready for an amazing adventure…

But have you thought about what happens if your luggage gets lost by the airline? Or if something happens to damage any of your equipment?

Good Italy travel insurance will usually cover the loss or damage of your luggage.

Travel insurance from companies such as Heymondo will cover your baggage in case of delays or if it becomes lost in transit.

It’ll cover things like the cost of transport for lost luggage and compensate you for any items you have to buy to replace the lost luggage.

This could even cover any damage to your items that occurs during transit, so if you find that your camera hasn’t survived the flight, you could make a claim.

Your luggage and personal items will also be covered in case of loss or theft. This is a particular lifesaver if an important document like your passport gets misplaced or even stolen.

For those of you who are taking a trip with expensive electronic equipment, you will probably want to take a closer look at the policy.

Coverage for single-trip usually covers baggage of up to $2,500, but your electronics may be worth much more than that in total.

You can opt to pay a premium for coverage of electronics and other devices so that you can claim if there’s an issue.

Car issues

Travel insurance for a trip to Italy isn’t just about covering your lost luggage. If you plan to rent a car and take a road trip during your vacation, your travel insurance can actually help you there, too.

When you rent a car, you’ll often be offered additional travel insurance by the rental company, but your travel insurance may actually cover you for driving abroad as well.

The Heymondo travel insurance provides coverage for rental cars with an excess of up to $500. This means you can claim if your rental car is stolen, involved in an accident or is damaged while you’re renting it.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes driving a car in a different country can be a little nerve-wracking.

And worrying about insurance is something I don’t want on top of that, whether it’s concerns about you damaging the car or even another driver damaging your car!

Medical assistance

Having coverage for medical treatment is probably the most important reason to get travel insurance for Italy.

You never know when something might happen. All sorts of medical issues can happen while traveling – you might be going hiking and get injured, trip over while crossing the road, or have a sudden illness.

Being covered for these incidents can save you thousands of dollars in the long run, and also means you get access to much needed treatment when you need it.

Something like appendicitis can strike without warning and need immediate medical attention, and getting treatment for this without insurance is going to be super expensive.

Travel medical insurance for Italy should cover a number of different things. This includes the transport to a medical facility and the medical repatriation back to your home country if it’s needed.

The insurance will also cover medical expenses abroad for any sudden illness or injury. They will pay for the hospital stay and any medication needed.

You will also be covered for emergency dental treatment that you might need when traveling abroad.

Covid-19

If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that a global pandemic can really hamper our travel plans. Thankfully, we’re out there traveling the world again, but Covid can still cause delays.

Recent updates to travel insurance policy means you’ll be covered for any issues caused by Covid that might interrupt your trip.

The Heymondo policy, for example, provides great Covid protection for your trip, covering you if you happen to catch Covid during your trip.

This Covid coverage includes medical expenses, transport if your trip has been altered due to Covid, and trip cancellation in case of serious illness.

Extreme sports

If you’re a traveler who likes to get out there and enjoy some extreme sports then travel insurance for Italy is definitely a good idea!

You might be spending Christmas in Italy, heading out to Trentino to do some skiing; or perhaps you want to do some windsurfing in Sardinia in summer; or you might want to do a bit of rock climbing.

Whatever it is that you’re doing, it’s a good idea to be covered for it.

Lots of travel insurance companies like Heymondo offer coverage for a long list of activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, and even hot-air balloon rides.

You may have to purchase an add-on to your travel insurance for other adventure sports like quad biking, bungee jumping, and horse riding.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

Sometimes your dream trip just doesn’t go to plan and you might not be able to actually go. Travel insurance will also cover you for cancellation and any interruption to your trip.

Heymondo, for example, will cover any cancellation costs up to $7,000, this means you will be reimbursed for the money you have paid for your trip.

You will also be eligible to make a claim if you have to cut your vacation short and return home early if something like a member of your family falls ill at home.

Why Heymondo?

There are a lot of travel insurance companies out there, and you’re probably wondering why Heymondo is so good.

Well, there are several great points that single out Heymondo as a great option for avid adventurers like yourself…

You can buy it while you’re already abroad

This is one of the key things I really like about Heymondo. Very few travel insurance companies actually offer this, and I think it’s great.

So that means if you forget to set yourself up with some travel insurance before you travel, you can buy it later while you’re on your trip. Very convenient.

24/7 assistance

It’s really annoying when you can’t get hold of important companies like your bank or insurance company because they’re “closed”.

In this day and age of the internet, with people working and traveling all over the world in different timezones, it makes sense for things to be more available, which is why Heymondo’s 24/7 assistance is a godsend.

Assistance app

Another thing that’s good about Heymondo is their app. It’s yet another modern element about this company that allows you to make any changes you want, when you want them. It’s all there in the app.

Flexibility

Whether you want coverage for a short break, longer trip, or many different trips one after the other, Heymondo will have you sorted.

The multi trip coverage is particularly handy, as it provides insurance for any and all of the trips you plan to take in a year (up to 60 days at a time).

My experience with travel insurance

I often jokingly say that this section should be called; “My experience without travel insurance and why you should be smarter than me and purchase travel insurance“.

I’ll admit I haven’t always been the most responsible or forward thinking traveller. I consider myself a very chill and easy-going person, which means I often tend to forget about serious “adult” things when I plan my trips.

Travel insurance is unfortunately one of these. It’s not that I don’t want to pay for it, I just often forget to buy it before setting off on a trip (which is why I love the “already abroad” option by HeyMondo)!

Long story short, a few years ago I was in Tenerife, where I caught a UTI that developed into a kidney infection, and I ended up hospitalised for two nights.

Despite being in Europe, I went to a private clinic since at the public hospital they made me wait for 3 hours with a 40°C temperature, and nobody ever attended me.

I weighed it up for a while and then just accepted I’d pay the 2,000 EUR bill, as I was feeling too horrible to wait any longer in the hospital waiting room.

If you have good travel insurance, you don’t need to torture yourself like I did weighing up pros, cons and expenses. Just head straight to the fanciest private clinic in the area and get help straight away.

And while medical expenses might be the most obvious reason why travel insurance is important, there are so many things that can go wrong which travel insurance can cover you for.

Think about delayed flights and missed connections, lost luggage, stolen electronics, and many others. Whatever little inconvenience happens on your trip, there is a pretty good chance travel insurance will cover you for it.

After this initial shock experience in Tenerife, I have used HeyMondo on every trip I’ve been on. Luckily, I haven’t had to use it very often, but there have been two cases where I needed to use it.

Once for a slight tonsillitis and once for a theft. I was very impressed with how the tonsillitis was handled.

I called HeyMondo through the app, they told me where the closest medical centre was and emailed them a payment pre-approval confirmation.

When I arrived at the medical centre they were already expecting me, they visited me within ten minutes, prescribed me the right medication and off I went, without paying anything extra.

Regarding the theft, after the trip I had to submit the police report of the theft, along with the receipts of the stolen items.

I didn’t get back as much as I would have liked, but that’s my own fault for not purchasing the electronics protection extra when travelling with a lot of camera gear.

Besides that, the whole process was super simple and got carried out efficiently. It took less than three weeks from when I first opened the claim to when I received the refund.

I wouldn’t recommend anything that I don’t personally use, which is why I’m proactively recommending HeyMondo. I’ve used it before, and I can guarantee it’s a good option when it comes to travel insurance.
